I’ve been drinking Isagenix shakes for more than 10 years. Here’s why they’ve remained part of my routine, how the different IsaLean shakes compare, and what you should consider before deciding whether they’re right for you.
There are plenty of ways to make a nutritious meal.
Sometimes I have the time to prepare one. Sometimes I don’t.
That’s one of the main reasons IsaLean shakes have remained part of my routine for more than a decade. I don’t see them as a substitute for eating a varied diet or as something everyone needs. I see them as a convenient way to make one meal simple.
Breakfast is where I use them most often. Instead of wondering what I’m going to make when the morning is already busy, I can prepare a shake quickly and get on with my day.
I also incorporate Isagenix shakes into my workout nutrition. Depending on what I’m doing, the higher-protein Performance version can be particularly useful when I want more protein around training.
After more than 10 years of using the shakes, what I value most isn’t anything dramatic. It’s their consistency and convenience. In my experience, they help me start the morning with energy, manage cravings, and give me peace of mind that one of my meals is contributing protein and a range of nutrients to my day.
That’s my personal experience, though—not a promise that someone else will experience the same results.
So what are IsaLean shakes actually offering?
Disclosure: I am an Isagenix Independent Associate and may earn compensation if you purchase Isagenix products through links on this page. I’ve personally used Isagenix shakes for more than 10 years. The opinions and experiences described here are my own.
What is an IsaLean shake?
IsaLean is Isagenix’s line of nutrient-dense meal-replacement shakes.
The standard whey-based IsaLean Protein Shake currently provides 24 grams of protein and 24 vitamins and minerals per serving, along with carbohydrates, fats, fiber and a complete branched-chain amino-acid (BCAA) profile. Isagenix describes it as a complete meal replacement rather than simply a protein powder.
That distinction matters.
A protein shake primarily gives you a convenient source of protein. A meal-replacement shake is intended to provide a broader nutritional profile so it can stand in for a meal when that is useful.
That makes IsaLean particularly interesting to me as a breakfast option. I’m not simply trying to get some extra protein. I want something designed to function as a convenient meal.

The three main IsaLean options
The easiest way to choose between them is based on what you’re looking for:
| Shake | Protein | Protein source | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| IsaLean Protein Shake | 24 g | Whey/milk | General meal replacement and everyday convenience |
| Plant-Based IsaLean Protein Shake | 24 g | Fava bean, mung bean and pea | Vegan/plant-based diets or people preferring plant protein |
| IsaLean Performance Protein | 36 g | Whey/milk | Active people wanting substantially more protein |
The exact nutrition facts and formulations can change, so I’d encourage readers to check the current product label rather than relying indefinitely on figures in an article.
1. IsaLean Protein Shake: the everyday option
This is the version I’d consider the starting point for most people interested in IsaLean.
The current Canadian formula provides 24 grams of high-quality protein, including whey and milk protein from grass-fed cows. It also contains 24 essential vitamins and minerals sourced in part from foods including kale, spinach, broccoli, sweet potatoes and mushrooms. Isagenix says it includes fiber, healthy fats and active enzymes and is soy-free, gluten-free, non-GMO and low glycemic.
Some current flavours also contain MCT oil. Isagenix’s site currently lists MCT versions including Creamy Chocolate, Creamy Vanilla, Creamy Strawberry, Cookies & Cream and Birthday Cake.
Who is it for?
I’d consider regular IsaLean if your main priority is:
- a convenient breakfast
- an occasional meal replacement
- getting a meaningful amount of protein in a meal
- having a predictable backup when you don’t have time to prepare food
- supporting an overall weight-management plan where meal replacement makes sense
For me, this is what makes IsaLean valuable as a breakfast staple.
There are certainly mornings when I could prepare oats, fruit, yogurt or another breakfast. There are other mornings when the difference is between making a shake in a couple of minutes and starting the day without much of a plan.
That’s where convenience becomes a health strategy rather than simply a luxury.
2. Plant-Based IsaLean Protein Shake
If you want the meal-replacement concept but don’t want whey-based protein, this is the obvious alternative.
The current Canadian Plant-Based IsaLean provides 24 grams of protein from fava beans, mung beans and peas, along with a complete BCAA profile. Isagenix lists whole-food-sourced vitamins and minerals and describes the product as vegan, soy-free, gluten-free, non-GMO and low glycemic.
Current flavors include Rich Chocolate, Vanilla Chai and Strawberry.
Who is it for?
The Plant-Based version makes the most sense for someone who:
- follows a vegan diet
- prefers plant protein
- wants to avoid dairy-based protein and/or is lactose intolerant
- wants a complete meal replacement rather than a basic plant protein powder
I wouldn’t characterize plant-based as automatically “healthier” than the whey version. They’re different options for different preferences and dietary requirements.

3. IsaLean Performance Protein: the higher-protein option
This is the version I’d pay particular attention to if exercise is an important part of your routine.
IsaLean Performance Protein currently provides 36 grams of protein per serving, compared with 24 grams in regular IsaLean. It uses whey and milk protein and also contains 24 vitamins and minerals, BCAAs, fiber and other components of the complete-meal formulation.
Current flavors include Natural Chocolate, French Vanilla and Strawberry Cream.
Isagenix specifically positions Performance Protein for people seeking additional protein and says it can be used before or after exercise or as a convenient meal.
Who is it for?
I’d look at Performance Protein if your priority is:
- getting more protein from the meal
- supporting an active lifestyle
- using the shake around workouts
- maintaining or building lean muscle as part of an appropriate training and nutrition program
This overlaps particularly well with how I’ve used Isagenix personally.
Exercise has been an important part of my routine, and I’ve used the shakes as part of my workout nutrition as well as for breakfast. I like having the option of a complete meal that also provides a substantial amount of protein.

What are the potential benefits?
I think it’s important to separate what the product contains from exaggerated claims about what a shake can accomplish.
IsaLean isn’t going to make an otherwise poor diet healthy.
Its practical advantages are more straightforward.
A substantial source of protein
Regular and Plant-Based IsaLean provide 24 grams of protein per serving, while Performance Protein provides 36 grams. Protein is important for normal body functions and maintaining muscle, and the whey-based products contain a complete BCAA profile.
For someone who finds it difficult to include adequate protein in a rushed breakfast, that’s useful.
A broader nutrient profile than a basic protein shake
IsaLean isn’t just protein powder.
The current regular and Performance formulas contain 24 vitamins and minerals, while the plant-based formula also provides a broad vitamin/mineral profile sourced in part from plant foods.
That broader nutritional profile is one reason I think of IsaLean as a meal rather than simply a workout supplement.
Convenience
This is arguably its biggest benefit.
Healthy eating advice often assumes you have time to shop, prepare, cook and clean up after every meal.
Real life doesn’t always cooperate.
A shake gives you a predictable option that requires very little preparation. That’s especially valuable if the alternative on a busy morning is grabbing whatever happens to be available.
Satiety
The regular IsaLean formula contains protein, fiber and fats, and Isagenix positions that combination as helping with satisfaction and cravings.
This lines up with my own experience. One reason I’ve continued using the shakes is that I find them useful for managing cravings after breakfast.
Again, that’s a personal observation rather than a guarantee of what another person will experience.
Can IsaLean help with weight loss?
A meal-replacement shake can be a tool within a weight-management strategy, but the shake itself doesn’t somehow cause weight loss independent of the rest of your diet and activity.
The practical idea behind meal replacement is much simpler: it gives you a pre-portioned meal with known nutritional content.
Isagenix specifically positions IsaLean as supporting weight management and notes that the shakes can make caloric intake easier to track.
I’d explain it this way:
IsaLean can simplify one of the decisions involved in a weight-management plan. It doesn’t eliminate the importance of the rest of your eating pattern, activity, sleep and other lifestyle factors.
That is a much more justifiable reason to consider a meal replacement than promising that a particular ingredient will “melt fat” or produce dramatic results.
And weight-management needs vary substantially by age, health, activity and other factors, so individualized weight-loss planning is something to discuss with a qualified healthcare professional rather than copy from a generic program online.
What about muscle and exercise?
This is one area where the different IsaLean formulas become important.
If someone simply wants a convenient breakfast, regular IsaLean’s 24 grams of protein may fit their needs.
If someone is highly active and wants more protein, Performance Protein provides 36 grams. Isagenix specifically positions it around strength, endurance and lean-muscle support.
There’s also a separate IsaPro product, which is worth distinguishing from the meal replacements. IsaPro is an 18-gram whey protein supplement designed to add extra protein to a shake, recipe or snack; it isn’t the same thing as a complete IsaLean meal replacement.
That distinction could matter if you’re comparing products on the Isagenix site:
IsaLean / Plant-Based IsaLean / Performance Protein = meal replacement
IsaPro = supplemental protein
My experience after more than 10 years
This is probably the most important part of my review because you can find the nutrition facts on the package.
I’ve been drinking Isagenix shakes for more than 10 years.
During that time, they’ve served two main roles for me.
One is breakfast.
I like knowing that I can start the morning with something consistent without having to plan, prepare and clean up after a more complicated meal every day. In my experience, the shakes give me energy to start the day, help me manage cravings, and give me peace of mind that one of my meals is contributing toward my protein and nutritional needs.
The other role is exercise.
I’ve incorporated Isagenix shakes into my workout nutrition, where the combination of convenience and protein makes them particularly useful to me.
But perhaps the strongest endorsement I can give isn’t a dramatic before-and-after story.
It’s simply this:
I’ve found them useful enough to keep using them for more than a decade.
They solve a recurring problem in my life: How do I make getting a reasonably balanced meal easy when time and convenience would otherwise work against me?
That’s exactly the kind of problem I want Shake Your Health Up to help solve.
What I like about IsaLean
For me, the strongest points are convenience, protein, broad nutrition, consistency, variety and the availability of different formulations for different needs.
I also like that there’s a clear progression rather than one product pretending to suit everyone:
Everyday meal replacement → IsaLean
Plant-based preference → Plant-Based IsaLean
Higher protein / active lifestyle → Performance Protein
That’s more useful than simply choosing a flavour.
What should you consider before buying?
No product is right for everybody.
IsaLean is considerably more convenient than preparing a meal from scratch, but it also means buying a specialized packaged product on an ongoing basis.
It also shouldn’t crowd whole foods out of the rest of your diet. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds and other foods provide variety and components that you don’t get by simply drinking the same meal repeatedly.
Dietary needs matter as well. The standard and Performance versions contain dairy-derived protein. Someone avoiding dairy or following a vegan diet would want to investigate the Plant-Based version instead. Always check the current ingredient and nutrition label for allergens and suitability.
And if you have a health condition, take medication, have allergies or have specialized nutrition needs, talk with an appropriate healthcare professional before making a meal-replacement product a regular part of your diet.
Which IsaLean shake should you choose?
A simple way to think about it is:
Want an everyday meal replacement?
Start with IsaLean Protein Shake.
Want a vegan/plant-based meal replacement?
Choose Plant-Based IsaLean Protein Shake.
Very active or specifically want more protein?
Look at IsaLean Performance Protein.
You don’t need to make the decision more complicated than that.
Is IsaLean worth it?
For me, yes—which is why I’ve continued using the shakes for more than 10 years.
But the reason I recommend them isn’t that I think everyone needs a nutrition shake.
It’s that convenience matters.
If you consistently have time to prepare a balanced breakfast you enjoy, you may not need a meal-replacement shake at all.
If your reality looks more like:
“I’m running late, I don’t have time to cook, and I need something now,”
then having a nutritious option that takes very little effort can be extremely useful.
That’s where IsaLean fits into my approach to health.
Sometimes improving your routine isn’t about finding the theoretically perfect meal.
It’s about making the better choice easy enough that you actually make it.
And sometimes, quite literally, that means shaking things up.
